Estrogen Dominance and Root Causes

For those struggling with premenstrual syndrome (PMS), low libido, and weight gain, there is a possibility that they are experiencing imbalances in their hormones. One of these hormonal discrepancies is the estrogen dominance, which happens when the body produces too much estrogen in the system. Unfortunately, this imbalance not only affects our daily living with its disturbing symptoms, but it can also lead to being prone to chronic health conditions.

When Does Estrogen Become a Problem?

According to the makers of estrosmart, the body produces the hormone estrogen through our adrenal glands, stored fat tissue, ovaries (for women), and testes (men). Estrogen plays an essential function in some of the body processes like metabolism, development of secondary physical characteristics, and child-bearing. When the body produces too much estrogen amounts more than what is needed and outnumbers the other hormones, this can lead to many issues both on men and women.

How to know if the body experiences estrogen dominance? Here are some of its symptoms:

For women:

  • Mood swings, anxiety, depression, and other emotional and mental issues
  • Loss of sex libido
  • PMS
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue

For men:

  • Enlarged breasts
  • Infertility
  • Sexual dysfunction

What are the Causes of Estrogen Dominance?

Food and Water

This basic need for survival is the most significant contributing factor for having estrogen dominance. The pesticides and herbicides sprayed in the fruits and vegetables have endocrine receptors that interfere with the natural activities of the hormone and metabolism in the body. Moreover, the growth hormones injected into the commercially raised animals that make them produce more milk can enter into the system that disrupts the natural balance of the hormones.

Unfortunately, our water nowadays contains different synthetic and natural allergens and other forms of waste that harm our health and hormone production.

Personal care products

Some cosmetics and hygienic products like lotions, shampoos, and soaps contain parabens, phthalates, phenoxyethanol, and other estrogenic activities. The more a person uses these products, the higher the risk of getting exposed to hormonal imbalances.

Moreover, the unspecified fragrances in some of these products contain xenoestrogens. These chemicals are also harmful as this absorbs directly in the tissues and never detoxify by the liver.

Gut

The gut microbiome helps in circulating the hormones with the presence of an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase. If this microbiome is imbalance like having small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), the enzymes will be unable to metabolize the estrogen. When this happens, it can lead to become expose to complications like breast cancer and other worse illnesses.

Plastics and BPA products

We are all aware of how plastics can harm the environment and other organisms on it. These products can also intrude to the normal process inside our body system, such as hormonal production. The BPA products also contain xenoestrogens that mimics the normal estrogen in the body. And as mentioned, these compounds stick to the skin and cannot be washed away from outside the body, so there is a higher risk of getting imbalances in the hormone because of this.
